Ford’s been raiding their classic performance nameplate toy box over the past few years to great effect. The Boss 302, GT350, SHO, RS and even the Ford GT have all been revived in one way or another lately, and at this year’s North American International Auto Show the Blue Oval looked to add one more to the list- but not in the way you’d think. Amid all the glamour and chaos of the Ford display in Cobo Hall, a short flashy video announced the return of the Mach 1.
This new Mach 1 won’t be a Mustang, however. In a seriously left-field move, Ford is using the iconic name for an all electric, performance oriented SUV. In all fairness, however, performance SUVs and crossovers are one of the fastest growing segments of the current market, and it’s certainly an interesting way for Ford to enter the electric performance game. That said, details on the new Mach 1 are extremely limited, so for the moment we’re all left to speculate. I’m sort of hoping for a two-door shooting brake with some off roading capabilities, but we’ll be waiting anxiously for any more information.
The video gives just a hint of the Frankenstein under way….
